NH7 Weekender is is among the biggest music festival in India, occurring in multiple cities every year. Roposo, a fashion social media site, sponsored the event and needed an attractive idea for a photo booth. We suggested a fully automated 360 GIF booth with social media sharing.

I wrote a python application running on a Raspberry Pi which detected user presence in the booth using an ultrasonic sensor. Whenever a user was detected, a heavy-duty stepper motor was slowly turned full 360 degrees by sending signals to the stepper motor driver from the python application.

The stepper motor shaft was connected to an L-shaped arm via a coupler. The arm's weight rested on heavy-duty mounted bearing and castor wheels, and the motor only provided rotational force.

An android tablet was connected at the end of the L-shaped arm. At user detection, the python script on Raspberry Pi would send trigger signal wirelessly to an android app(created by my colleague) to provide a countdown before starting rotation and then taking images at regular intervals while rotating the arm. The tablet used front camera and showed user the feed on the screen. An external flash would trigger at every click illuminating the user and informing them of clicks.

Another app, also made by my colleague, wirelessly received the GIF from the tablet on the arm and display it to the user after they stepped out of the booth. They were then provided option to share it on multiple social media sites.

The installation was very popular at the event and hundreds of GIFs were taken and shared at the event over multiple locations.
